Odd Beholder — Internet Famous
Odd Beholder, the electro wave / indie pop project of Swiss musician Daniela Weinmann, announces her fourth album Honest Work and releases the single “Internet Famous” on February 27th, 2026.
About the single:
Finally “Internet Famous”! What musician wouldn’t want to go viral?
Odd Beholder’s new single kicks off with a busy signal on the phone and launches straight into an electro-glam track in the vein of MGMT, featuring poppy hooks, writhing bass lines, synth glides spiraling in a controlled loss of control, claps, cowbells, and call-and-response backing vocals. Odd Beholder teams up with indietronic producer Douglas Greed and synth wizard Luzius Schuler (Dino Brandao, Alois). Maybe this time fame will finally work out?
The song tells of the infrastructures of fame and reach. It takes us to the Columbia River, which supplies a Google data centre with electricity. On its banks, a worker is taking a break and is ‘washing her wounds and dreams’. She has had many jobs; she has worked in agriculture and in the salmon fishery. But now she faces a buzzing server labyrinth where vast amounts of digital data, such as Odd Beholder songs, are stored. At night, she thinks of the silenced Celilo Falls, which were flooded in the 1950s and were the centre of life for many Native Americans who lived off fishing. It represents a way of life that has been lost.
Now, the mighty river is being used to produce ‘streams’. The worker dreams of perhaps also going viral on the internet and rebelling against her oppressors – but how can she do that when they control the digital public sphere with their infrastructure?
‘Internet Famous’ deals with the neo-colonialism exercised by large digital monopolies (Google, Meta, Apple, Amazon, you name it).
Weinmann explains:
“In the song, I position myself – as a small songwriter subject to Spotify’s market power – in solidarity with the people who have to work in those server complexes or who were dispossessed by the construction of the infrastructure. I claim that if you were to blow up the dam, you’d instantly become ‘famous.’ People in Mountain View, Google’s headquarters, would certainly hear about it. But as someone who writes songs, I of course choose a non-violent path: ‘I’m just a songwriter, no dynamiter’ – I try to give these issues a voice using my artistic means.”
However, being “Internet Famous” today is not the same as truly being heard. Independent artists now speak in “algospeak” on TikTok and Meta to gain reach, avoid shadowbanning, and be recommended to the right people. To become “Internet Famous,” we start to talk differently or censor ourselves – which ultimately means that only content pleasing to the tech overlords of the broligarchy can really be discussed.
“We have to resist this dystopia, and we’re doing far too little about it,” says Weinmann. “And of course I don’t mean blowing things up, but developing a political strategy.
Europe’s massive economic and public-sector dependence on these digital corporations worries me greatly in an era shaped by the authoritarian ambitions of the Trump administration. Seen this way, the song is a protest song against this kind of colonialism of meaning, which is directly connected to old colonialism.”
About the album:
On the new concept album Honest Work, ten songs tell stories from the adult lives of working people in the middle and lower classes. They work night shifts in hospitals, pump breast milk in storage rooms, wonder whether they should get a prescription for Ritalin, are summoned to the boss’s office for wearing the wrong clothes, or take a day off just to walk barefoot by a lake.
Lyrically, Honest Work can best be described as “petty-bourgeois surrealism.” It’s an album about people trying – and often failing – to navigate systems that reduce them to anonymous data points, employees, and consumers. The album is full of desperate prayers: “Doctor, I think that I’ve got a disease” (Focus Disease), “Taking a day off… don’t even remember my own name” (Remind Me), “I serenade on company time” (Lean Dreams). In these lines, you can feel the dull ache of a generation whose emotional lives are filtered through corporate HR language and online shopping carts.
Honest Work will be released on May 22, 2026.
