Lost in Lona — Scared Like A Mother And Her Gun
In a world often shrouded in shadows and melancholy, Lost in Lona finds hope and creates sounds that gently guide through the confusion of life. The indie-folk project by Lidia Beck and Konstantin Aebli presents a renewed facet of their previously finely produced music with their debut album "Scared Like A Mother And Her Gun," now embracing a band sound reminiscent of greats like Big Thief or Phoebe Bridgers.
The duo's nine-part, entirely self-produced and self-recorded debut album tells stories of love, self-doubt, and fear – very personal themes handled with great authenticity and depth by the two artists. The delicate, melancholic melodies and profound lyrics create an atmosphere that is both comforting and inspiring – a soundtrack for life's highs and lows.
The first song, "On Purpose" opens the album with a late realization, reflecting on past decisions, conversations, and thoughts. In a bittersweet contemplation, the song expresses a belated apology to those hurt along the way. The already released song “Lose It All” from March describes the complexity of a friendship in which mental illness plays a significant role, addressing the associated fears and uncertainties. The melancholic yet uplifting mood captures the painful observation of how people lose themselves.
“Stronger Than You Think” addresses a painful breakup from a long, toxic relationship, emphasizing the strength and healing that can arise from processing the hurt. "As It Was" deals with an intimate observation of an unnoticed glance, accompanied by the warmth and affection that such a silent experience brings – the experience of being loved and the associated feeling of connection.
With "Insecure" the duo dives into the depths of insecurity and anger. The song paints a picture where there is no energy left for thinking, and each day brings new dissatisfaction and repetitive patterns in a seemingly endless cycle of self-criticism. "Please Adore Me" then addresses the fear of not meeting one's own and others' expectations and the inability to flourish due to self-criticism and dissatisfaction.
The tension between shared loneliness and the merging of needs and expectations within a relationship is explored in "Crumbling”. The song paints a picture of a torn connection, moving between desire and disappointment. "Pillow Song," on the other hand, describes healing and blossoming after a toxic relationship. It depicts how new, healthy bonds are formed and old, harmful patterns are questioned, focusing on the comfort that a new encounter provides.
The title track, "Scared Like A Mother And Her Gun" closes the album by exploring a variety of fears, particularly the fear of others' opinions. The song highlights the central theme of social self-criticism and the different forms of fear that haunt us all in one way or another.
Recorded in the summer of 2023 in Basel, the album is a testament to the passionate creative process of Konstantin Aebli and Lidia Beck.
