IKAN HYU — g h o s t

With „g h o s t“, IKAN HYU release the fourth single of their upcoming album. In line with their ever-evolving style, with this song the duo moves away from an electronic and synth-heavy sound into yet another stylistic dimension: driven by drums and guitars and with a melodic chorus,„g h o s t“ takes us straight back into the early 2000s.

This time period sets the backdrop to the song’s theme: for Hannah, who wrote the song, this was a time of making friends and growing up which was marked by a toxic friendship that still resonates with her as an adult. With countless songs being written about love relationships, „g h o s t“ speaks about friendships and how those connections can have an equally strong impact on us.

While the instrumentation is stripped down compared to IKAN HYU’s other songs, a full drum set was used for recording „g h o s t“. This will pose an interesting challenge for live performances, where the duo uses a hybrid acoustic/electronic drum setup that is played standing up.

Even though „g h o s t“ draws elements from the past thematically and in sound, it stays true to IKAN HYU’s way of pushing forward by experimenting with different instrumentations and genres.
