Black Sea Dahu — Ruth (Live in La Rochelle)

This is a live version of the single “Ruth” from the album “Everything” by Black Sea Dahu (released in February 2026). “Ruth (Live in La Rochelle)” was recorded and filmed on tour in La Rochelle, France, by the sea on a windy day in July 2025.

“Ruth” is a journey inward — into the earth, into oneself, into the question of what makes life worth living.

The title was inspired by a pigeon the band found injured during tour. It passed away the same day, and they buried it in the garden behind that night’s venue. They named it Ruth and sang a farewell song. As they gathered around the small grave, life felt unbearably fleeting, and Janine’s mind wandered: What if the earth suddenly yawned open and pulled us all down toward its molten core while our lives flashed before our eyes? What would I see? How would I feel about it?
That strange, vivid image — the gravity of life, the pull toward the unknown, the weight of the big questions — planted the seed for “Ruth.”

The song traces a path inward — into the landscape of our truest wishes for life, the choices we make along the way, and the blurred line between living and dying, which may not be a line at all.

“I often wish I could be more present, with me and with others.
Sometimes I feel like falling into this strange space inside, like tumbling backwards into my own head, I lose all focus, just stare, disconnected from everything around me. But in truth I’m not with myself at all — it’s the opposite. Connecting with humans doesn’t come easy and asking for help is way down the list for me. Maybe that’s why the burdens I carry feel so heavy: the weight is not in them, but in my belief that I must carry them alone.” Janine

At its heart, “Ruth” is a reflection on what is worth holding on to, and what can be released. And it carries the simple lesson that perspective matters: One autumn, while gathering walnuts, Janine realized that by occasionally shifting her view, she noticed more walnuts hidden in the grass. A simple truth, but one that stayed with her: seeing things from a different angle can make all the difference.

The ground beneath a walnut tree yields its secrets to those who adjust their gaze, and in the same way, Ruth asks us to turn toward life’s big questions and meet ourselves with unflinching clarity.
